In dragon age, how do you get the darkspawn taint?

Now i am well aware that if you eat darkspawn flesh the taint becomes part of you but let's be serious, who is the moron who eats zombie flesh (they are not zombies but you get the idea)! If that was the only way to get the taint then only the starving or your dog would get the taint. yet the process for creating a broodmother says that a female must aquire the taint then eat the flesh of her fellows. how do you 'aquire the taint'. Also people mention open wounds that festered. Is that just another way of mixing blood or what. I guess my question is, list all the possible ways to aquire the darkspawn taint.
