A question for Middle Easterners?

Let's say that a Westerner and an Iraqi (Muslim) became friends. For what reason might an Iraqi living in England lie to their Western friend and claim to be living in Syria? Would they believe that it was "cooler" to be living in Syria than to be living in England or would they possibly lie in order to appear more knowlegeable? Any ideas? Inquiring (internet savvy) minds want to Know. Thanks for any serious answers.
